Natalie writes letter to Allure magazine |
Lead | |
|
In the latest Allure magazine, with Claire Danes on the cover, Natalie sent in a letter to the editor apologizing and further explaining the context of her remarks about W.E.B. DuBois. I'm typing it up now, I'll post it in a sec.

Re: Natalie writes letter to Allure magazine

I am writing to offer my most sincere apologies for not being as articulate as I could have been regarding my thoughts on W.E.B. DuBoiss The Souls of Black Folks [Natalie Would, August]. My lack of eloquence, combined with my words being taken out of context, led to the printing of a statement of mine that I found personally offensive: Im not black, but I know what it feels like.
If I had spoken more articulately, I might have conveyed what I truly feel: I could never know what is like to be a black American. I could only imagine what its like to be anything other than what my own experience has been. The it I was referring to when I said, I know what it feels like, was not intended to signify that I know how black people feel, but rather that I know what DuBoiss concept of double-consciousness feels like, in variation. Had my quote included what I actually said preceding that statement, perhaps my meaning would have been clearer. DuBois writes about how black Americans often view the world simultaneously from other peoples points of view (from the outside in), as well as from their own points of view (from the inside out), because they are so aware of how they are scrutinized by other people and prejudices other might have against them. Of course, the prejudices people might have against me are extremely different that those they might have against black people as a group, to say the least. There is absolutely no comparison in the content of the double-consciousness described by DuBois and the one that I, as an actress in the public eye, experience. I merely related to the overall framework of his idea what is feels like to see always see yourself from within and from without, knowing how other people view you and judge you and knowing how you view and judge yourself, at the same time. I apologize for being insulting or ignorant in any way. I tried to explain my experience using a concept written by someone light-years more intelligent and eloquent than I am, whose writing made me feel like someone else had been through a similar psychological experience to mine in some way. I clearly did not express myself well enough to deserve the right to quote a man as brilliant as DuBois. I do believe, however, that it is in small ways we relate to each other, even if we do so inaccurately, that we build our relationships with each other and realize our common humanity. I understand that we are essentially ignorant in actually knowing anothers life, but imagine anothers life is the basic way we relate to one another. I sincerely, and with my deepest regrets for offending any readers, apologize and apologize and apologize. This has upset me deeply, and I will do my best to be more thoughtful and articulate in the future. Respectfully, Natalie Portman |

I love that she wrote that.... so biting and scathing. Stick it to 'em! Hold them accountable!

Wicked. Very well-written (as if that's a shock, right?).
I knew what she meant, but IIRC when I was reading that article, it was set up in such a way that it could sound misleading. Well, Allure isn't exactly the New Yorker anyway. |

Phooey!
What a lot of PC twaddle. It sounds like Natalie's lawyer wrote it. Or her sociology prof. C'mon Nat: there was no need to apologise for what you said. "Never complain and never explain." |

I think that Nat is just trying to show the upmost respect for a great man. I don't think it was "PC". LOL, what was she supposed to say about him? "Fuck Black Nationalism!"???
And I specifically remember people ON THIS BOARD pointing out the awkwardness when she mentioned him in that interview, so if we caught on to it maybe someone else that actually knows her was like "Hey, slow your roll" which caused her to write this. I mean, she WAS comparing herself to a man that in his time could have been lynched for even walking down the street.............. ![]() "Shaaneequa,Torraannaa, Natalie" |

Re: I know! | ||

Or maybe she just likes to hear herself talk (or read what she writes in this case).
Hell, this could even help her with Oscar buzz or something....who knows. ![]() "Shaaneequa,Torraannaa, Natalie" |

Quote: Geez. You guys are a tough crowd. I seriously doubt her lawyer wrote it. I have no doubt it passed across his/her desk before it went in the mail, but I don't doubt she wrote it. Sounds like her to me, anyway. No, it's more like somone intelligent clarifying a position and concept. Simple as that. Let's not all jump on the reactionary "Oh that's PC! Bad! Bad!" bandwagon, okay? Hey Darth, back me up here! |

I'm with GVC. She already defended this quote, remember? This is Natalie. Of course, it was checked over...but we know she was dissatisfied with the misrepresentation of the quote. People assume that she's being more innocent than she is. Actually, it's quite scathing. She doesn't want to make an enemy of Allure, but it is a bit passive aggressive. She mentions the misquoting a little and you can clearly see that she is unhappy. I like how she doesn't place all the blame directly on the magazine. It (the "I know what that's like" remark) seems like a comment only those who hear the conversation (and the proper context, possibly with a bit of familiarity with Nat) would fully understand.

I know what she means. | ||
Quote: GVCaroll, I think what Natalie meant is that, even though she's not black, she might as well be... her opinion is just as important. Natalie and I are, for all intents and purposes, invisible. We literally do not matter anymore. We barely even exist. Nothing we say matters. I don't think Natalie is innocent at all... she is anything but. I hate it when people imply that she is innocent, because the sad part is that she's not. Bush and his supporters are very, very supportive of Israel. This bothers me, as I'm sure it bothers her, because I think they are doing it for false reasons. I do not think their concern is genuine and is only based on the fact that they are fighting ragheads. It's that simple. Israel is a means to an end for them, rather than an end in and of itself. Its possible when youre that intelligent people dont know what the hell youre talking about 80% of the time heh.
I also am the type of person to have a built in perception translator of myself along with my own view. I have some black blood in me but i dont think thats it fully. In fact one couldnt tell if you didnt look closer being very pale and caucasian looking at first |

Re: I know what she means.
Quote: Oh I know what she meant. I think it's kind of shitty that people, on this board no less, think that she's being haughty and PC (whatever the hell that means anymore). I can't imagine anyone going further out of their way to genuinely not be that way, but to not appear so, and still be crucified for it. Has intelligent discourse depreciated in value and/or is that ego-threatening in this country that it's actively scorned upon? That's really depressing. It's like she's damed if she does, and damed if she doesn't. I know I said I try not to defend her that much, but this is REALLY something I'm fucking tired of hearing about her. But I guess the fact that she if she has fat in her ass - god forbid - or when she's going to show us 'the goods' onscreen are more acceptable topics. |
